The Trouble with Heroes

by Kate Messner

A novel in verse about Finn Connelly, a grieving thirteen-year-old who, after damaging a gravestone, is offered a way to make amends by hiking all forty-six Adirondack High Peaks with a dog.

Big Idea

Heroism is not the same as perfection: people can show courage while carrying grief, making mistakes, and accepting help. Finn's journey shows how taking responsibility and facing difficult experiences can change the way we understand ourselves and others.

Discussion Questions

1.At the beginning of the novel, what does Finn believe about heroes? How do his memories of his father and his experiences on the mountains complicate those beliefs?
2.How does Finn's anger affect his choices and relationships? Where do you see feelings that he finds harder to express beneath that anger?
3.After Finn damages a gravestone, he is offered an unusual way to make amends: hiking the Adirondack High Peaks. What can this consequence accomplish that a conventional punishment might not?
4.How does hiking with a dog change Finn's experience of responsibility, companionship, and asking for help? Which moment best supports your interpretation?
5.How does Messner's use of verse shape our understanding of Finn? Choose a passage where line breaks, pauses, or the space on the page communicate something beyond the words themselves.

Lesson Plan

⏱ 55 minutes📦 Copies of the novel or selected passages, large paper, sticky notes, pencils, colored pencils or markers, and a board or projector. Optional: a simple map of the Adirondack High Peaks.

Learning Goals

Analyze how Finn's responses to challenges reveal changes in his character.
Develop a thematic interpretation of heroism, grief, or accountability using relevant textual evidence.
Explain how verse structure, line breaks, and white space influence pacing and meaning.
Write and revise a brief narrative poem using deliberate pacing choices.
Discuss differing interpretations respectfully while distinguishing evidence from inference.

Activity Steps

1.Introduce the guiding question: What makes someone heroic when they are hurting or have made a mistake? Review the novel's premise and establish that students may discuss grief through fictional characters without sharing personal experiences.
2.In small groups, select four moments from the assigned reading: a harmful choice, a difficult challenge, an experience of support or connection, and a moment that suggests a changing perspective. Record a quotation or accurate paraphrase and its page or poem location for each.
3.Draw a mountain and winding trail on large paper. Place the four moments along the trail in story order, labeling each stop with what Finn does, what he may be feeling, and what the evidence suggests.
4.At each stop, add a three- to five-line original poem capturing the contrast between an outward action and an inward feeling. Experiment with one short line, one purposeful pause, and one concrete sensory detail.
5.Exchange maps with another group. Partners identify the strongest text-supported interpretation and explain how one verse passage speeds up or slows down their reading.
6.Revise one trail stop and complete an exit ticket: 'Finn's journey suggests that heroism is ___ because ___.' Include a supporting story detail.

Pace-Write-Read Study with Pace-Write It!

The Trouble with Heroes is a novel in verse about Finn Connelly, a grieving thirteen-year-old who, after damaging a gravestone, is offered a way to make amends by hiking all forty-six Adirondack High Peaks with a dog. That combination of a demanding physical journey and an emotionally resistant narrator makes the book especially useful for studying writing craft. In a Pace-Write-Read study, students first notice how Messner controls the movement of a passage, then try a related technique, and finally read their own work aloud to test its effect. Finn's verse narration lets readers examine pacing at several scales: the overall hiking challenge, the movement within a scene, and the placement of individual words on lines. Short lines can emphasize effort or resistance, while longer phrases can carry a rush of observation or thought; students should test these possibilities against specific passages rather than assume that every short line has the same effect. The novel also demonstrates how an external goal can organize an internal story. As Finn encounters the demands of the mountains, readers reconsider his anger, his grief for his father, and his ideas about heroes. Invite students to ask not only what happens next, but why the author gives one moment space and moves quickly through another. Those decisions help make an emotional change feel earned rather than simply announced.

Element	How to notice or teach it in the novel
Pace	Compare a passage about physical movement on a hike with one focused on Finn's memories or feelings. Mark where syntax, line length, and breaks make the reading accelerate or linger.
Plot	Trace the causal chain from Finn's destructive choice to the forty-six-peak challenge and its consequences. Distinguish progress toward the hiking goal from changes in his understanding of himself.
Prosody	Read a Finn passage aloud twice, testing different stresses and intonation. Discuss which performance best fits his attitude and the punctuation, without treating every line ending as a mandatory full stop.
Word Pause	Find a word placed at a line ending or standing alone, and test how a slight pause affects its weight. Ask whether the placement emphasizes Finn's resistance, effort, uncertainty, or another feeling supported by the passage.
Concept	Study the central pairing of a mountain-climbing challenge with a grieving boy's struggle over heroism. Have students explain why these two story ideas strengthen each other.
Voice & World View	Identify diction and observations that establish Finn's skeptical, angry, or humorous voice. Revisit later passages to ask whether his outlook changes even when his recognizable voice remains.
Setting & Place	Treat the Adirondack High Peaks as more than scenery: terrain, distance, and conditions create demands Finn must respond to. Separate geographical facts from the emotional meanings he attaches to a place.
Point of View	Examine how Finn's first-person narration gives access to his thoughts while limiting access to other people's motives. Rewrite a short interaction from another participant's perspective and compare the resulting interpretations.
Original Characters	Build a character portrait of Finn using a contradiction, a desire, a difficulty, and a revealing action. Discuss how this combination makes him more specific than the general label 'angry teenager.'
Dialogue	Choose a conversation in which Finn resists, deflects, or accepts something from another person. Contrast what he says aloud with what his narration reveals, then examine how that gap creates tension.
Details	Collect concrete details from a hiking passage and identify which convey effort, discomfort, or connection. Ask how removing one detail would change the reader's understanding.
Descriptions	Compare a description of the landscape with a description of Finn's physical response to it. Notice how selected sensory information can make setting and emotion work together.
Strong First Lines	Examine the opening lines of several poems or sections for attitude, action, or an unanswered question. Have students write three alternative openings for a hiking scene and explain which best invites continued reading.
Immediacy & Engagement	Find a passage that places readers close to Finn's immediate experience rather than explaining it from a distance. Identify how concrete action, direct thought, or sensory language produces that closeness.
Story Scenes & Summaries & Unique Structures	Sort selected passages into developed scenes, compressed summaries, and reflection. Discuss how a novel in verse can cover an extensive hiking challenge while giving particular emotional moments more room.
Flashback & Flash Forward & Cliffhangers	Track passages that turn from the current hiking journey toward memories of Finn's father, noting the signals that orient readers. Separately identify endings that leave an outcome unresolved; do not assume the novel uses all three devices equally.
Tension & Suspense & Surprise	Distinguish physical uncertainty about the hikes from emotional uncertainty about Finn's choices and relationships. Ask how new information changes an earlier judgment of him or his father.
Page Turns and Chapter Breaks	Study poem or section endings alongside the next opening in the classroom edition. Explain whether the break creates anticipation, marks a transition, or gives readers time to absorb an emotional turn.
Performance	Prepare a paired oral reading of a short passage, choosing tempo, emphasis, and pauses from textual evidence. Compare performances without requiring students to dramatize personal grief.
Personality	Locate moments where Finn's choices and phrasing reveal personality beyond his sadness or anger. Discuss how consistent traits and surprising responses make his development believable.
Humor	Find a humorous observation or interaction and examine its timing. Ask whether the humor offers relief, builds connection, protects Finn from vulnerability, or serves more than one purpose.
Pause	Identify a moment when the story lingers on reflection rather than moving immediately to another action. Discuss why readers may need that pause to understand the emotional significance of the journey.
Poetry and Poetic Devices	Annotate a selected poem for imagery, sound, figurative language, and enjambment where present. Explain how a device develops Finn's experience rather than merely naming it.
Repetition	Track repeated words, ideas, or references connected to heroes, climbing, or Finn's father. Ask whether a recurrence reinforces an earlier meaning or reveals a changed one.
Rhythm	Listen for the movement created by sentence patterns and line lengths in a hiking passage. Test whether that movement suggests steady progress, strain, interruption, or reflection.
Punctuation	Compare grammatical pauses with line breaks in Finn's verse narration. Read a passage according to its punctuation first, then discuss what the lineation adds.
Questions	Collect questions Finn asks directly or that his experiences raise about his father and heroism. Distinguish questions that propel events from those that invite unresolved reflection.
Compare-Contrast	Compare Finn's ideas about heroes early and later in the novel using matched evidence. Avoid reducing the comparison to 'bad attitude versus good attitude'; identify specific shifts in understanding.
Objects	Examine the damaged gravestone as a physical object with personal and ethical significance. Ask how the same object can mean something different to Finn and to someone connected to the person it commemorates.
Threes	Look for an actual three-part list or sequence in an assigned passage and consider its effect if one appears. If none appears, use three hiking details in a student imitation and distinguish that exercise from a claim about Messner's recurring style.
Whitespace & Negative Space	Study how blank space and line placement frame Finn's words on the page. Reformat a short excerpt as prose and compare what becomes less noticeable or changes in the reading experience.
Art & Graphics	Examine the cover and any visual material present in the classroom edition, distinguishing those features from Finn's verbal narration. Students can design an evidence-based trail graphic that links physical progress with emotional turning points.
Interactives & Gamification	Create a classroom trail tracker where each milestone represents a supported interpretation, a craft observation, or a revision. Frame this as a teaching adaptation, not a feature of the novel, and avoid awarding points for emotional disclosure.

Pace-Write It!

20-minute Pace-Write-Read workshop: 'Outside Steps, Inside Feelings.' Minutes 0–4: Read a short teacher-selected hiking passage from the novel; mark one concrete detail, one line break, and one pause that shapes Finn's voice. Minutes 4–7: Discuss how the passage connects physical effort with emotion, grounding interpretations in its wording. Minutes 7–12: Write an eight- to twelve-line fictional poem about a young hiker facing a difficult stretch while also carrying an unspoken worry; use one sensory detail, an enjambed sentence, and a deliberately brief line. Label it as original writing inspired by the novel, not a missing scene. Minutes 12–16: Read to a partner, who identifies where the pace changes and what feeling the change suggests. Minutes 16–19: Revise line breaks or punctuation without changing the central event. Minute 19–20: Submit both versions with one sentence explaining how the revision changed pace or meaning. Students may use an entirely invented worry rather than personal grief.

Classroom Activities

A Mountain of Choices: Mapping Finn's Changing Idea of Heroism

Students build a paper mountain trail that connects Finn's outward hiking journey with his inward movement through anger, grief, responsibility, and connection. Each trail stop combines a text-supported interpretation with a short original verse passage. Students may write entirely about fictional characters; personal disclosure about loss is never required.
