Little Red Chicken is eager for Papa to read her a bedtime story, but she keeps interrupting familiar fairy tales to warn their characters and prevent trouble. When Papa suggests that she tell a story instead, their bedtime routine takes a funny, affectionate turn.

Stories gain momentum through the interplay of anticipation, interruption, and pause. Little Red Chicken also helps readers explore how enthusiasm and care can coexist with the need to listen and take turns.

Activity Steps

1.Read the book aloud, allowing students to hear the rhythm of Papa’s storytelling and Little Red Chicken’s interruptions. Afterward, chart the recurring pattern: story begins, trouble approaches, Chicken interrupts, story stops.
2.Choose a familiar tale together and model a brief new interruption. For example, Little Red Chicken might warn a little pig about the wolf before he reaches the door; discuss how this changes the tale’s pace.
3.Have students fold a sheet into a four-panel mini-book. Plan four moments: a bedtime storytelling setup, an approaching problem, Chicken’s interruption, and the storyteller’s response or ending.
4.Students illustrate and write their mini-books. K–1 students may dictate dialogue or use speech bubbles; grades 2–5 can add narration, purposeful punctuation, and an ending that changes the expected pattern.
5.Partners rehearse their books twice, changing one pacing choice such as a pause before the interruption or the speed of Chicken’s warning. Listeners explain how that choice affected suspense or humor.
6.Invite a few performances, then ask students to identify one pacing choice they would keep or revise. Close by practicing how a listener can save a comment until an agreed stopping point.

Each familiar tale begins to build toward danger, but Chicken breaks in before that danger can unfold. Readers experience a repeated cycle of anticipation, interruption, and restart—and soon begin anticipating the interruption itself. A Pace-Write-Read study invites students to notice how words, pictures, dialogue, and page turns work together to control that experience. Papa’s storytelling voice contrasts with Chicken’s urgent warnings, while the movement between the bedroom and the pictured fairy tales changes the reading rhythm. The ending shifts the established pattern when Chicken becomes the storyteller and Papa falls asleep. 3. Prosody	Read Papa’s narration with a calm bedtime cadence and Chicken’s interruptions with urgency. Let students hear how phrasing, stress, and volume distinguish the speakers without requiring shouting.
4. Word	Examine the direct, urgent language of Chicken’s warnings beside the language that introduces the familiar tales. Invite students to choose one warning word and explain how its sound or meaning affects delivery.
5. Concept	Name the central comic concept: a listener knows the danger in familiar stories and refuses to let it happen. Ask students how this one idea can generate several different scenes.
6. Voice & Worldview	Chicken treats fictional danger as something she must stop, while Papa treats stories as experiences to hear through to the end. Discuss how these different outlooks shape their voices and choices.
7. Point of View	Distinguish the book’s third-person bedtime narration from characters speaking in dialogue. Then explore perspective by having students describe the same interruption as Papa and as Chicken.
8. Setting & Place	Compare the cozy bedroom with the fairy-tale worlds shown during Papa’s reading. Notice how returning to the bedroom restores the bedtime frame after each burst of action.
9. Original Characters	Although the embedded tales are familiar, Papa and Little Red Chicken give the book its distinctive relationship and conflict. Ask students which actions make Chicken recognizable beyond her appearance.

12. Descriptions	Notice how illustrations supply much of the descriptive information about the bedroom and story worlds. Have students describe one pictured moment, then decide which words their own illustration could make unnecessary.
13. Firsts	Study how the first interruption teaches readers the book’s comic rule. Compare the surprise of that first interruption with the anticipation readers bring to the next tale.

20-minute Pace-Write-It! task: “Wait … Now Warn Them!” Minutes 0–3: Revisit one of Chicken’s interruptions and identify the setup, approaching danger, and warning. Briefly supply the familiar tale’s context for students who need it. Minutes 3–6: Model a new scene in which Papa begins The Three Little Pigs and Little Red Chicken warns a pig about the wolf; demonstrate an immediate warning and a warning delayed by one suspense-building detail. Minutes 6–12: Students create a three-panel scene showing Papa beginning, danger approaching, and Chicken interrupting. K–1 students may draw and dictate; grades 2–5 add dialogue and a deliberate pause marked with a slash for rehearsal. Minutes 12–17: Partners read each scene twice, changing only the timing of the warning, and discuss which version creates more suspense or humor. Minutes 17–20: Students revise one word, punctuation mark, or panel placement, then share how the revision changes the reader’s experience.
