A Book for Everyone

by Hayley Rocco

A picture book about a character who believes there is a perfect book for every reader, exploring the joy of finding just the right story.

Big Idea

Finding a book that connects with our interests can help us discover the joy of reading. Readers have different tastes, and listening to one another helps us recommend stories that feel just right.

Discussion Questions

1.Why do you think the main character believes there is a perfect book for every reader? What do you notice in the words or pictures that helps you understand that belief?
2.What makes a book feel right for you? How might your choice be different from a classmate's choice?
3.How could you help someone who says, "I don't like books," discover a story they might enjoy?
4.What can the characters' words, actions, or expressions teach us about how it feels to find an interesting book?
5.Can more than one book be perfect for a reader? How might the books you love change as you grow or try something new?

Lesson Plan

⏱ 45 minutes📦 A copy of A Book for Everyone, a varied selection of classroom or library books, paper or index cards, pencils, crayons, and chart paper; optional sticky notes and teacher-prepared interview cards.

Learning Goals

Describe the main character's central belief using evidence from the book's words or illustrations.
Identify personal reading interests and recognize that classmates may enjoy different books.
Ask questions, listen to a partner, and use their answers to make a thoughtful book recommendation.
Use drawing, dictation, or writing to explain why a particular book might interest a reader.
Experiment with reading pace and pauses to communicate curiosity and excitement.

Activity Steps

1.Read the book aloud. Pause at selected spreads to ask what the main character believes about readers and how the illustrations support that belief.
2.Model a short reader interview: "What do you like learning about?" and "What kinds of stories make you curious?" Explain that a good match considers interests, not just reading level.
3.Pair students and have them interview each other. Students record two interests through pictures, words, or adult-supported dictation.
4.Invite partners to browse a small selection of classroom books. Each student chooses a possible match for their partner by examining covers, illustrations, and a few pages.
5.Have students create a recommendation card: "I chose ___ for you because ___." Add an illustration showing the connection between the book and the partner's interests.
6.Let partners exchange recommendations and preview their suggested books. Close by discussing how listening helped them find a match and why trying a different book is always welcome.

Pace-Write-Read Study with Pace-Write It!

In A Book for Everyone, Hayley Rocco's central premise—a character's belief that there is a perfect book for every reader—offers young writers a clear connection between character motivation and story movement. As you read, ask students to notice how the character's belief shapes what happens next. Writers can begin with something a character cares about, then build moments that invite readers to care too. For a Pace-Write-Read study, use the physical picture book to investigate how words, illustrations, and page turns guide the reading experience. Compare a moment that invites close looking with one that encourages readers to move ahead. Read a short passage in two different ways, then discuss which pace best fits its meaning. Students can transfer this observation to their own miniature stories about helping someone find a book. The craft guidance below draws on the supplied summary rather than a verified transcription of the book. Use the actual pages to identify examples of dialogue, repetition, punctuation, and visual spacing; when a device is absent, teach it as a possible writing choice rather than attributing it to Rocco.

Element	How to notice or teach it in the novel
Pace	Notice where the search for a fitting book invites the reader to linger and where the story moves forward quickly. Read one selected passage at two speeds and ask which better communicates the character's purpose.
Plot	Map the main character's goal, the actions taken toward that goal, and the outcome shown in the book. Help students see how a belief about books can become a story through action.
Prosody	Use expression to communicate the character's enthusiasm for connecting readers with books. Let students explain which words or pictures support their vocal choices.
Word Pause	Choose a meaningful word in a passage about books or readers and briefly pause before or after it. Discuss how that small pause can draw attention to an important idea.
Concept	State the premise in child-friendly language: "Different readers can find different books to love." Ask students how that single idea could inspire many different book-matching stories.
Voice & World View	Explore how the main character's belief presents reading as a source of possibility and joy. Look for actual language and images that make this outlook feel inviting.
Setting & Place	Use the illustrations to identify where the action takes place rather than assuming a particular book-related setting. Ask how that place helps or complicates connecting readers with stories.
Point of View	Identify who tells the story and whose thoughts or feelings readers can access. Imagine how a selected moment might sound if told by a reader receiving a book recommendation.
Original Characters	Discuss what makes the main character more than simply "someone who likes books," using observed actions and visual details. Have students invent their own book-loving character with a distinctive interest or habit.
Dialogue	If the book includes dialogue, notice how spoken words reveal preferences or move the action forward. Students can write an original exchange in which one character asks what another enjoys reading.
Details	Look closely for small details that reveal a character's interests or response to a book. Explain that a specific detail can make a recommendation more convincing than saying, "This book is good."
Descriptions	Compare what the text describes with what the illustrations show about readers and books. Invite students to describe their own chosen book with one useful detail rather than a long list.
Strong First Lines	Read the actual opening and discuss what it makes students wonder or understand. Have students try an opening for their own story that introduces a reader, a wish, or a book-related problem.
Immediacy & Engagement	Ask when students first feel curious about the character's mission. Connect that interest to the familiar experience of wanting something enjoyable to read.
Story Scenes & Summaries & Unique Structures	Notice whether the book slows down for individual moments or moves across several actions quickly. Help students choose one book-matching moment to show as a scene rather than summarizing their entire reading history.
Flashback & Flash Forward & Cliffhangers	Check whether the book shifts in time or leaves a question unresolved before a page turn; do not assume these devices appear. As an extension, students can imagine a character remembering a favorite book or wondering what they will read next.
Tension & Suspense & Surprise	Explore any uncertainty about whether a reader will find a fitting book. If a match is unexpected, discuss how the words or pictures prepare for that surprise.
Page Turns and Chapter Breaks	Before selected page turns, ask what students expect to see next and then compare their predictions with the reveal. Focus on page turns rather than chapter breaks unless the actual book includes labeled divisions.
Performance	Invite students to perform a short, original book-recommendation exchange inspired by the character's mission. Encourage gestures and expression that show listening as well as enthusiasm.
Personality	Identify a personality trait supported by the main character's actions, not just by the book's premise. Ask how a writer could show a helpful or determined personality without naming the trait.
Humor	Look for amusing expressions, contrasts, or situations in the actual pages, if present. Discuss how gentle humor can make a story about readers inviting without making fun of anyone's preferences.
Pause	Take a longer pause after a meaningful story moment so students can examine the illustration and consider a character's feelings. Distinguish this reflection pause from a brief pause around a single word.
Poetry and Poetic Devices	Listen for any repeated sounds, vivid comparisons, or other poetic language in the text without assuming it rhymes. Students can create their own comparison, such as describing a favorite book as a doorway to an adventure.
Repetition	If a word, phrase, or situation returns, track how it reinforces the belief that readers can find fitting books. If repetition is absent, students can experiment with a recurring line in their own story.
Rhythm	Listen to the flow of a selected passage, noticing how sentence length and word patterns affect its movement. Have students read their recommendation aloud and adjust wording that feels awkward.
Punctuation	Examine punctuation on a selected page and model how it guides the voice. Students can choose a period, question mark, or exclamation point to match the meaning of their own book-matching sentence.
Questions	Notice any questions in the text and what they help readers discover. Connect this craft choice to the questions students ask before recommending a book to a partner.
Compare-Contrast	Compare readers' preferences when the book provides examples, or connect its central idea to preferences within the class. Emphasize that different choices can be equally valuable.
Objects	Study how books function as important objects in the story, connecting characters with interests and possibilities. In student writing, have a particular book influence an action rather than serve only as decoration.
Threes	Check for groups of three in wording, images, or events; treat this as an observation question, not a guaranteed feature. Students can try listing three interests before selecting a possible book match.
Whitespace & Negative Space	Inspect how open space around words or pictures directs attention on an actual spread. Ask students how leaving space around their recommendation card's main image changes what viewers notice first.
Art & Graphics	Use illustrations to investigate feelings, book choices, and information not stated directly in the text. Have students make their recommendation image add meaning rather than simply repeat the written sentence.
Interactives & Gamification	Turn the book's central belief into a cooperative book-matching challenge using classmates' interest clues. Keep the goal exploratory: a reader can decline a suggestion and try another without anyone losing.

Pace-Write It!

20-minute Pace-Write-Read workshop: "Will This Be Your Book?" Minutes 0–3 — PACE: Revisit a spread connected to the character's belief or efforts to connect a reader with a book. Read its text at two speeds and discuss which pace fits the words and illustrations; notice whether the page turn creates anticipation. Minutes 3–6 — PLAN: Students invent a reader with one specific interest and choose a classroom book that might fit. Plan three beats: the reader shares an interest, a helper offers a book, and the reader responds. Minutes 6–12 — WRITE: Fold paper into a four-page booklet. Use the cover for a title and the remaining pages for the three beats, combining drawings with a dictated or written sentence on each page. Invite students to put the offer at the end of one page so the response appears after a turn. Minutes 12–17 — READ: Partners read their booklets aloud, pausing before the response page. The listener explains where they felt curious and whether the recommendation matched the invented reader's interest. Minutes 17–20 — REVISE: Students change one word, punctuation mark, detail, or page placement to improve the reading experience. Close by connecting their writing choices to the book's central idea: thoughtful listening can help a reader discover a story they may love.

Classroom Activities

A Book Match for Everyone

Students become book matchmakers, echoing the main character's belief that every reader can find a fitting story. After interviewing a partner about their interests, students browse classroom books, recommend a possible match, and create an illustrated recommendation card. The receiving reader can accept the suggestion or explain what they would like to try instead.
