Space Chasers to the Moon

by Leland Melvin and Joe Caramagna

In this space-adventure graphic novel, young explorers pursue a journey to the Moon, encountering challenges that call for curiosity, teamwork, and problem-solving. Leland Melvin and Joe Caramagna combine an interest in space exploration with the visual storytelling of comics, inviting readers to follow both the adventure and the choices that move it forward.

Big Idea

Exploration requires both scientific curiosity and cooperation. Graphic storytelling shows how words, pictures, and carefully timed pauses can make a challenging mission feel exciting and understandable.

Discussion Questions

1.Choose a moment when the explorers face a difficult decision. How do their different ideas affect what happens next?
2.How does the book make the Moon feel like a place worth exploring—and a place that requires careful preparation?
3.Where do the pictures tell you something that the dialogue does not? How would your understanding change if you read only the words?
4.Which sequence feels fastest, and which feels slowest? What choices about panels, dialogue, or page layout create those effects?
5.What does the adventure suggest about being ready for a challenge? Use a character’s actions or a team interaction to explain your thinking.

Lesson Plan

⏱ 45 minutes: introduction and reading, 8 minutes; close observation, 7 minutes; planning, 5 minutes; comic creation, 15 minutes; peer response and revision, 7 minutes; reflection, 3 minutes.📦 Copies of the book or a legally displayed selected sequence, paper, pencils, erasers, colored pencils or crayons, three-panel and six-panel comic templates, sticky notes, and a timer.

Learning Goals

Explain how illustrations and dialogue work together to develop a graphic-novel scene.
Identify at least two techniques that accelerate or slow narrative pacing.
Create two coherent comic sequences that portray the same event at different speeds.
Use evidence from the book to discuss cooperation and problem-solving during exploration.
Revise a comic after a partner describes its pacing and emotional effect.

Activity Steps

1.Introduce the question, “How can the same mission moment feel fast or slow?” Read a teacher-selected sequence involving the explorers’ lunar goal or a challenge along the way.
2.Reread the sequence together. Identify the characters’ immediate goal, the obstacle, and evidence of teamwork; then mark places where pictures, dialogue, or panel transitions affect reading speed.
3.Have pairs choose one event from the sequence and write a one-sentence account of what happens. They should preserve the event rather than add an unrelated mission or outcome.
4.Create a fast version in three panels, using concise dialogue and clear action. Create a slower version in six panels, adding observation, reaction, or a purposeful pause without changing the event’s outcome.
5.Exchange comics. Partners identify the faster version and explain which choices influenced their reading; creators revise one feature in response.
6.Share selected examples and complete an exit ticket: “I changed the pace by ___, which helped the reader notice ___.”

Pace-Write-Read Study with Pace-Write It!

PART 2: PACE-WRITE-READ WORKSHOP Space Chasers to the Moon offers a useful setting for studying how writers and artists control the experience of an adventure. A lunar journey gives readers reasons to anticipate, observe, and wonder. In a graphic novel, however, pace does not depend on sentences alone: panel size, the amount of dialogue, changes in viewpoint, and the distance between one pictured action and the next all influence how quickly readers move. Begin with a short, verified sequence from the book rather than assuming that every pacing device appears throughout it. Ask students to distinguish story time from reading time: an important instant can occupy several panels, while a longer stretch of travel can be compressed. Have them examine how the explorers’ words and visible reactions direct attention toward a problem, a relationship, or the surrounding space environment. The Pace-Write-Read cycle turns that observation into craft practice. Students notice a choice in the published sequence, write and draw their own version of the same event, and then read it aloud with a partner. Their goal is not simply to make everything faster, but to choose a pace that serves the lunar adventure’s meaning—urgency when action matters, and room to think when observation or cooperation matters.

Element	How to notice or teach it in the novel
1. Pacing	Compare two short sequences connected to the lunar adventure and time a natural reading of each. Ask how action, dialogue, panel transitions, and visual detail—not merely panel count—affect the perceived speed.
2. Plot	Map the explorers’ goal, a verified obstacle, their response, and the consequence. Identify which of these plot beats receives the most space and discuss why.
3. Prosody	Read a team conversation aloud, using balloon punctuation and visible expressions to guide phrasing and emphasis. Try a second delivery and discuss how it changes the scene’s urgency.
4. Word	Collect precise action words and space-related terms from the selected passage. Test whether replacing one with a longer explanation makes the moment clearer, slower, or less immediate.
5. Concept	Identify a space-exploration idea that the selected pages help readers understand. Notice whether the book conveys it through an image, dialogue, or a combination, and how that affects the adventure’s flow.
6. Voice & Worldview	Compare how two explorers talk about the same mission challenge. Ask what their language suggests about curiosity, caution, confidence, or responsibility without assigning traits unsupported by the text.
7. Point of View	Track whose reactions and knowledge guide a chosen sequence. Distinguish a change in visual camera angle from a change in narrative perspective.
8. Setting & Place	Examine how panels establish locations connected to the Moon journey. Discuss when a broad view helps readers orient themselves and when a close-up shifts attention to an immediate problem.
9. Original Characters	Use the book’s named explorers to create a chart of distinctive speech, actions, and visual features. Ask how those differences help readers follow a team scene quickly.
10. Dialogue	Choose an exchange about the mission and identify what each balloon accomplishes: sharing information, disagreeing, deciding, or reacting. Revise a practice exchange so each line serves a clear purpose.
11. Details	Find a small visual or verbal detail that helps explain an explorer’s action or a mission challenge. Discuss how noticing it rewards careful reading without requiring extra explanation.
12. Descriptions	Study how the artwork describes a space-related setting, character, or piece of equipment. Write a prose equivalent and compare how much reading time each version requires.
13. Firsts	Locate the first introduction of an important character, location, or mission goal. Notice what readers learn immediately and what the creators leave for later.
14. Immediacy & Engagement	Select a panel that makes the lunar adventure feel especially immediate. Identify whether framing, movement, expression, or concise wording creates that effect.
15. Story Scenes, Summaries & Structures	Distinguish a moment shown action by action from any passage that compresses events or time. Explain why a particular team interaction or obstacle benefits from being presented as a full scene.
16. Tension / Suspense / Surprise	At a verified mission obstacle, list what the explorers know, what readers know, and what remains uncertain. Discuss how withholding or revealing information changes the reading experience.
17. Flashback, Flash-Forward, Cliffhanger	Check the selected pages for an actual time shift or unresolved ending rather than assuming one appears. If none is present, invent a clearly labeled alternative ending that leaves the explorers’ next action uncertain.
18. Page Turns and Chapter Breaks	Pause before turning a page during the Moon adventure and make a prediction from the final panel. After the turn, discuss how the placement of new information confirms, delays, or changes expectations.
19. Pace & Creativity	Redraw one verified mission event at two speeds while preserving its outcome. Compare the creative possibilities of quick action and an extended moment of observation.
20. Play	Give students movable paper panels representing a short book sequence. Let them test an alternate arrangement, then explain which order preserves the mission’s cause-and-effect logic.
21. Performance	Perform a short team exchange with one student describing essential visual action. Add pauses only where the panels support them, then discuss how performance exposes pacing choices.
22. Personality	Find contrasting responses to the same exploration challenge. Examine how a brief reply, a longer explanation, or a visible reaction communicates personality and changes the scene’s tempo.
23. Humor	If the selected passage contains humor, identify the setup and the image or line that completes it. If it does not, discuss whether inserting a joke would support or weaken that mission moment.
24. Pause	Look for a wordless panel or a held reaction during the adventure. Explain what readers can notice during that pause that might disappear in a faster version.
25. Poetry / Poetic Devices	Check the actual wording for sound patterns, figurative language, or expressive sound effects. If none appears in the excerpt, write an optional Moon-inspired comparison and evaluate whether it suits the scene’s voice.
26. Repetition	Look for repeated words, gestures, images, or panel compositions. Ask whether the repetition emphasizes a mission concern, builds anticipation, or helps readers recognize a change.
27. Rhythm	Trace the pattern of action, speech, and reaction in a team sequence. Read it aloud to hear how alternating those elements creates a rhythm.
28. Punctuation	Inspect punctuation in a verified exchange between explorers. Test how changing a question mark, exclamation point, or ellipsis alters delivery and implied confidence.
29. Questions	Collect questions the characters ask about their mission or immediate circumstances. Separate questions that receive quick answers from those that keep readers anticipating.
30. Compare-Contrast	Compare two characters’ approaches to one obstacle, using words and pictures as evidence. Then compare how much space the comic gives to each response.
31. Objects	Choose an actual object shown in the lunar-adventure sequence and trace its role. Discuss whether it establishes setting, enables an action, or directs attention toward a problem.
32. Threes	Check for a genuine three-part pattern in actions, reactions, or panels; do not force one onto the book. Use the selected event to practice an original three-beat sequence: goal, complication, response.
33. Lists	If the explorers name several tasks, concerns, or resources, examine how the list is presented. Otherwise, create a clearly labeled planning list based on the selected event and compare it with dramatizing each item.
34. White Space & Negative Space	Distinguish gutters between panels from open areas within the artwork. Ask how each helps separate actions, focus attention, or communicate the scale of the space setting.
35. Art & Graphics	Read a selected sequence first through its images, then with its words. Identify what framing, expression, and movement contribute to understanding the explorers’ challenge.
36. Interactives & Gamification	Turn a verified mission decision into a classroom prediction challenge: students propose a next step and justify it before reading on. Treat this as a teaching extension, not a claim that the book contains game features.
37. Placement	Follow the arrangement of panels, balloons, and important visual information on one page. Discuss how placement guides reading order and determines when readers notice a reaction or reveal.
38. Form	Rewrite a brief Moon-adventure sequence as a prose paragraph. Compare how the comic and prose versions handle simultaneous action, dialogue, and pauses.
39. Dummy	Make a small folded-paper mock-up of an adaptation of the selected event. Test panel placement and a page-turn reveal before adding finished drawings.
40. Passion	Identify a moment when an explorer’s interest in the mission is visible through action or speech. Discuss how enthusiasm can motivate the story while cooperation and careful thinking shape what happens next.

Pace-Write It!

20-minute Pace-Write-It! task: “One Moon-Mission Moment, Two Speeds.” Before the workshop, choose a four-to-eight-panel passage from Space Chasers to the Moon in which the explorers confront a challenge connected to their lunar adventure. Minutes 0–4: read it together and identify the exact goal, obstacle, and response. Minutes 4–6: students write one sentence stating what happens and choose the emotion they want readers to feel. Minutes 6–14: students adapt the same event twice—a three-panel fast version and a five-panel slower version—preserving the book’s characters and outcome while adjusting dialogue, reactions, and visual pauses. Minutes 14–18: partners read both versions and explain which feels faster and why; students revise one choice. Minutes 18–20: each student completes, “My pacing choice helps readers notice ___ about the explorers’ mission.” Use simple figures and speech balloons so drawing skill does not limit participation.

Classroom Activities

Moon Mission: Change the Pace

Students select a short challenge from the explorers’ lunar adventure and create two comic adaptations: one that moves quickly and one that slows down to emphasize observation, uncertainty, or teamwork. They keep the central event the same while changing panel count, dialogue, visual detail, and pauses. Suggested instructional range: grades 4–6, with drawing, dictation, or partner support as needed. Because no excerpt or edition details were supplied, teachers should select and verify the passage before teaching; the package avoids unverified character names, quotations, and specific incidents.
